  • It Started Helping my Daughters

Before the advent of smartphones (or, at least, everyone owning one), when my daughters were lost or wanted to find a nearby destination, or needed some other type of help, they'd call Dad. Whether I was at work or at home, there was always a computer available to look at maps, check schedules, find store locations, or whatever. Eventually, my wife and then a few of my friends would call for help, often these were more about the "joke" of calling for help than real need.

  • It Just Kept Growing

Eventually, family and friends found my "service" extremely valuable. I would help them with almost any question. I helped find locations and give directions for locations thousands of miles away; I looked up store hours; I found all-night coffee shops for someone driving 19 hours from the East coast to the Mid-West; I guided a family member through a computer and network installation; I developed a Microsoft Excel macro to help a friend convert between two formats.

  • The Ubiquitous Smartphone

Soon almost everyone had a smartphone. Great! "Remote Dad" wasn't needed. Not so fast! Everyone found it was difficult to impossible to easily get locations and directions via smartphone while driving. A call to someone was much easier - and safer. While most questions can be answered with our smartphones, we need to be able to devote our attention to our smartphone to get the desired result. When you are driving, you just can't safely use your smartphone for these needs.
